Hey CocoZini fans,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend. It was Mother’s Day weekend in the United States. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you lovely mums out there.

This maxi dress was done a year ago, and I’m only now getting around to uploading it. You would have seen it if you subscribed to my YouTube, channel. I just haven’t put it up on the website yet, which I’m doing right now. Please bear with me.

Also, I have a few more sewing DIYs that I haven’t yet uploaded here, which I will do gradually. Have a great week ahead.

DIY Simple Knit Maxi Dress Tutorial

Hello Beautiful people. I made this maxi dress a few weeks ago. It’s a very simple dress that you could easily make within an hour.

I used the bodice I made in the tutorial of  How to draft a simple knit bodice for this maxi dress. When I was cutting it, I had to cut it on the right side so I could easily align the lines of the pattern design on the fabric.

Fabrics with lines could be a little intimidating to work with because you have to perfectly align the lines. If not, it will look crazy when you’re done no matter how beautiful the fabric is.

Sew a Maxi Dress in Less than an Hour

Hi All, Hope you’re all having a nice week so far. I’m wearing a T-Shirt maxi dress I put together within an hour and I was able to do a quick tutorial on it. I have both the photo tutorial and I also have the video tutorial Here.

Here is The Tutorial

Below are the materials including your sewing machine, You will need 2 to 2 and 1/2 yrds of knit fabric.

Step 1:

Fold your fabric into 4. Fold it into 2 first with the finished edges together then fold it one more time.  Also fold your T Shirt into 2 with the front side inside and the back outside. Lay it on the folded part of the fabric and trace it out.

NOTE:  When tracing it make sure you leave half an inch allowance space.

Step 2:

Take out your T Shirt and put it on. Measure from the hem (the bottom part of the T-Shirt)  to how long you want the maxi dress to be.

Go back to the fabric, using the number you got,  measure starting from the bottom of the traced T-Shirt to the end of the measurement and mark it.

Step 3:

At the end of the measurement, draw a line from one end of the fabric to the other end.

Step 4:

With a ruler pivot and draw a line from the side seam of the hem of the TShirt to the line you marked where you want the maxi dress to end.

Step 5:

To cut out the neck measure the length of the neck starting from the back neck to the end of the front neck like the photo below.

Mark it on the fabric and trace it starting from one neck angle to another.

Here is what the neck will look like after cutting.

Step 6:

At this point if you have a serger you can finish all the edges or you can use the zigzag option on your machine. Knits do not fray so you can also leave the edges the way it is.

Step 7:

Take your dress to the machine and join the shoulder and side seam together using the zigzag stitch. Its always advisable to use the zigzag stitch when working with knit. If you use the straight line stitch it snaps and cut when pulled.

Step 8:

Using 1/2″ seam allowance  sew the neck, sleeves and the hem.

I used 1′ for my dress hem but you can use 1/2″ or leave it raw. It wouldn’t rip or fray.
